AutoLog GSM-RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) devices are briefly described as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) which are especially designed to communicate via GSM/GPRS networks.
AutoLog GSM-RTU combines the traditional PLC features with built-in GSM/GPRS features. GSM-RTUs can be remotely supervised using Process Insight Internet service, Web Studio SCADA or GSM phone.
AutoLog GSM-RTU devices collect analogue measurement and digital status information from their targets. This information is sent wirelessly to a control room supervision application.
Users in the control room can analyse information using graphical trend views, alarms views, animated process views, report views, etc. Users can also control targets remotely from the same graphical user interface. Alarm messages can be forwarded to user's mobile phone or e-mail.
All the measurements, alarms and events are time-stamped and stored in the SQL history database. Users can see the graphical control room views also through Intranet/Internet using a web browser, e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome.
Typical remote monitored and controlled target applications are oil and gas wellheads and pipelines, pumping stations, tanks, electrical transformer stations, real estate, vehicles (AVL), weather stations, etc.
This is just a list of typical applications, it doesn't mean that AutoLog GSM-RTUs are tied to any specific applications; using its modular I/O and freely programmed application program it can be used in almost any remote supervision application.
AutoLog GSM-RTU is not just measurement data logging and forwarding device; it can be programmed, just like traditional PLC, to independently and automatically control the target application.
AutoLog GSM-RTU has all the traditional PLC features included e.g. numerous I/O combination possibilities, plug-in analogue input modules, built-in Modbus RTU (Master/Slave) communication protocol, connections (I2C or serial port) for various local HMI user interfaces, plug-in serial port function conversion modules, 32 built-in PID controllers, multi-featured programming etc.
AutoLog GSM-RTU is not just PLC with GSM modem. It has a built-in GSM driver, which handles all the modem commands automatically, so application programming is very easy.
Application programming includes many useful GSM specific functions like incoming phone number- and password identification and authentication.
AutoLog GSM-RTU communicates bi-directionally with control room applications, GSM phones or with other AutoLog GSM-RTUs using wireless GSM network. It uses SMS messages or GPRS packet data or both.
The measurements can be time-stamped and stored into AutoLog GSM-RTU's memory and read to SCADA when needed using GPRS data transfer or SMS messages. GSM-RTU can send data only when polled from the control room or it can send data spontaneously or both.
Alarms for example can be sent immediately to control room using spontaneously sent SMS messages. Alarm messages or measurement reports can be forwarded to user's GSM phone or e-mail.
